Charlotte Bailey

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT)

& EMDR Therapist

Charlotte Bailey, online therapist

Hi, I’m Charlotte and I have over 10 years’ experience supporting people through their difficulties - within the NHS and through private practice, helping them change unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviour and increase their confidence and self-esteem.

I have extensive experience and a special interest in working with trauma, and I am passionate about helping people explore and overcome adverse past experiences which continue to impact them in the present.

I am a fully qualified Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (CBT) and accredited member of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) this means you can be assured I have undertaken a high level of training; I am fully qualified, and I work in line with ethical and professional guidelines, ensuring my knowledge remains up to date and I provide a safe and competent practice.

I incorporate a number of different approaches within my practice such as CBT, Schema Therapy and EMDR to tailor my therapy to the individual and the difficulties they are having.

Additionally, I am experienced in working with people who feel their engagement in certain sexual activities or behaviour feel out of their control and are having a negative impact on their daily lives – often referred to as ‘sex/porn addiction’ or sexual compulsive behaviour.

What to expect:

It is not uncommon for people to find the prospect of therapy daunting and to have certain ideas of what to expect from a therapy session.   When you enter therapy with me you aren't expected to lead the conversation and fill the silence and you certainly won't be expected to lie on a couch whilst I psychoanalyse you!  Instead, my focus is putting you at ease, guiding the conversation when necessary and managing your expectations for therapy whilst emphasising my non-judgmental and approachable nature.  I am by no means overly formal within my approach and clients often report finding it reassuring and beneficial that I am professional yet down-to-earth and genuine.

I will help you take a step back from the overwhelming nature of your difficulties and we will build a shared understanding of what you are going through; exploring factors underlying your difficulties alongside those things maintaining them but with the ultimate aim of utilising effective tools and techniques to help you break free from the negative cycle/s you find yourself in, regain a sense of control, progress towards your goals and ultimately improve your wellbeing.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidenced based & well researched talking therapy. It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for many mental health problems.

It is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for many other mental and physical health problems.

CBT focuses upon how your thoughts and behaviours impact upon your emotions and physical symptoms.

CBT is collaborative treatment and typically involves doing homework tasks between appointments.

It aims to teach you to become your own therapist, teaching you tools so you can keep using the strategies and techniques you have learned after you have finished therapy.

What is EMDR?

EMDR Stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation Regulation.

When a person experiences psychological trauma or highly stressful events, they are not always able to process the relevant information (i.e. thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations). As a result, they can end up getting “stuck” inside of them and can resurface later on, as if the person was still reliving the traumatic or stressful event.

EMDR aims to ‘process’ negative experiences or events which can subsequently improve emotional well-being and help to significantly reduce, but more often eliminate distressing symptoms and bodily sensations associated with the trauma.

In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also acknowledged EMDR as being an effective treatment approach to psychological trauma and trauma-related disorders.
