Wendy Turton
BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT)
Consultant Chartered Psychologist (BPS)
Having started out in Mental Health Nursing, I subsequently trained in psychological therapy and have worked in NHS Psychology and Psychological Therapy Services for nearly 20 years, rising over time to a senior position. In addition, I currently lead the clinical training in the South West for CBT for severe mental health problems, including Bipolar Disorder and Psychosis. In clinical practice, I adhere to the Professional Codes of the BPS and the BABCP.
I bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Psychotherapy space. Although primarily a Cognitive Psychotherapist (CBT), I have training and experience in providing Compassion-Focussed Psychotherapy (CFT), Mindfulness-based Psychotherapy (MBCT), and Schema-Focussed Psychotherapy.
As I get to know someone wishing to undertake psychotherapy, we will jointly agree an approach to follow based on the best evidence-base for the person’s troublesome experiences and my clinical judgement about what approach might be the most acceptable for the person dependent on the therapy goals they have shared with me. I believe it is important to talk about possible psychotherapeutic approaches and agree the journey forward.
The Psychotherapy I provide is a collaborative, shared journey encouraging active participation from the person undertaking the therapy. I aim to create a safe space to reflect on difficulties, develop an understanding of them, and support a journey of change. The development of the Therapeutic Relationship is the most important component of effective psychotherapy.
During my career, I have specialised in working with people who have experienced childhood traumas that continue to impact on their adult lives, their sense of themselves, and their interpersonal relationships.
I also offer extensive experience in working with:
Low Mood
Self-defeating Behaviours
Negative sense of self
Self-Criticism
Understanding & Staying Well with Bipolar Disorder
Personal Recovery in Psychosis
Trauma

Anger
Non-Self Harming personality-based or schema-based difficulties

Feedback from Wendy’s clients
“Wendy in essence has helped me reclaim my life! Wendy is a gentle skilled and professional therapist who has enabled me in collaboration to gain more awareness and control of my bipolar condition while guiding me towards a better more whole life. Among the many technique’s she used was a framework of thinking which put my difficult thoughts into context and provided a springboard for more positive choices and changes. All this has given me a better quality in my relationship with myself, my husband, family and friends, my initial goal at the start of therapy. Thanks Wendy, I couldn’t have done it without you!” Yvonne
“Wendy has been incredible to work with. She has been very sympathetic to my needs and tailored every session accordingly. Wendy offered as little or as much guidance as I wanted and was always very good at checking where I was at and how I was feeling before starting a session.
Wendy has given me invaluable tools to use to change my life moving forward in a way that no other professionals I have previously seen for mental health issues have been able to. I now feel confident that I have a better understanding of myself and Wendy has helped me to realise that there is always a choice in how I cope with certain situations.
Above all Wendy has taught me self-care and self compassion that I am embracing in a way completely new to me and crucial to achieve a much more stable experience of the world moving forward. I will always be incredibly grateful for the way Wendy has helped me to change my life for the better.” Vanessa
“Wendy has been the best therapist I've had so far. I've been in therapy before due to traumas and how it has been impacting my current life today and only after working with Wendy I feel I had a breakthrough and experienced some deep healing.
Its difficult to put in words as it affected me on different levels. I felt truly seen, heard and understood during the sessions , also I could feel genuine empathy and understanding, also lots of patience.
At the end of each session Wendy would come with the solution or what to practice during the week till the next session. I also liked her explanations and analysis of my feelings, and it worked for me very well.
During the course of therapy I started not just to see my situation and relationships in my life more clearly , I also started to feel much stronger in my life. Before I started the sessions with Wendy I used to go into deep depression and very low mood, my only solution was to dissociate from situations in life, now after working with Wendy I feel strong enough to deal with challenges and situations.
It was healing for me on many different levels and I can honestly say that sessions with Wendy impacted my life immensely for the better and I will be forever grateful for that. I would recommend Wendy 100% for anybody . Her therapist skills, ability to attune, to understand, perceive and transform are excellent and she has been a real support in my life for all this time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Georgia
